Angama Mara

Angama Mara sits 1,000 feet above the Mara Triangle on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, its name taken from the Swahili word for 'suspended in mid-air'. Built and run by the Fitzgerald family, the lodge is split into two camps of 15 tented suites each, including family tents, with floor-to-ceiling glass fronts overlooking the same view used in the film Out of Africa. The property's 700-hectare site includes 1.2km of Rift Valley frontage and its own private forest and wildlife. An additional $20 from every room night goes to the Angama Foundation, which funds healthcare, conservation and education projects identified jointly with neighbouring communities, the Mara Conservancy and local NGOs. The lodge runs entirely on solar and hydropower. Activities include private game drives into the Mara Triangle, hot air ballooning at sunrise, and a Maasai jewellery workshop where local women make bespoke pieces for guests.
