Bushman's Kloof

Bushman's Kloof was farmland before becoming a place to visit, growing rooibos, citrus and potatoes. Today it's predator-free (bar the odd Cape leopard) and malaria-free, but home to one of the largest private herds of Cape mountain zebra anywhere. Rooms, suites and villas sit among indigenous gardens in the Cape Floral Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage biome with an exceptionally high density of plant species. There are more than 130 San rock art sites across Bushman's Kloof's 7,500 hectares, some painted as far back as 10,000 years ago, which means the reserve is a Grade 1 South African National Heritage Site.

A Heritage Centre, opened in 2004, houses artefacts collected over five decades by Swedish anthropologist Jalmar Rudner such as San jewellery, hunting equipment and musical instruments, alongside a medicinal herb garden growing the same plants San and Khoikhoi communities once used for treatment. The reserve also partners with the Cape Leopard Trust on predator research and uses Anatolian shepherd dogs to protect neighbouring livestock without harming the leopards.
