Track desert elephants and safeguard communal water in Damaraland
In Namibia's arid northwest, free-roaming desert elephants share fragile territory and scarce water sources with subsistence farming communities. Founded in 2003, Elephant-Human Relations Aid (EHRA) runs hands-on volunteer expeditions that bridge the gap between people and elephants, reducing human-wildlife conflict so both can thrive side by side.
Volunteers spend their first week building sturdy rock-and-cement protection walls around communal water tanks, windpumps and solar installations to keep elephants from damaging village supplies. The second week is spent on patrol in open 4x4s and on foot, tracking the herds along dry ephemeral riverbeds, compiling identification data and monitoring newborn calves.
Sustainability
Climate & conservation
- Protected water points, volunteers have walled 239 village water points so elephants can drink without breaking pumps and tanks
- Elephant dams, 10 separate drinking points built away from homesteads to reduce night-time encounters in villages
- Satellite tracking, nine desert-adapted elephants collared, feeding an early-warning system for farmers
- Solar pumps, diesel pumps replaced with solar ones so communities can pump enough water for livestock and wildlife
Community & culture
- Coexistence training, more than 5,500 people trained to live safely alongside elephants
- Community elephant guards, five local guards employed through the PEACE project
- Safer homesteads, 279 solar lamps installed to deter elephants from homes at night
Commercial
- Volunteer-funded, volunteer fees pay for building materials for the walls and for the monitoring patrols
Sustainable Development Goals
- Life on Land (SDG 15)
- Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6)
