The NGO behind the Gili Islands' Biorock, one of the world's largest reefs
Gili Eco Trust coordinates coral reef restoration and marine protection across Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno, best known for pioneering Biorock technology in Indonesia: submerged steel structures carrying a low-voltage current that lets coral fragments grow three to five times faster than on natural reef. Visitors can dive or snorkel the Biorock site off Gili Trawangan, now one of the most photographed dive sites in Indonesia, or join multi-week volunteer courses combining diving certification with hands-on reef restoration training.
Founded in 2000 by the islands' dive shops to fund a community patrol unit against dynamite and cyanide fishing, the Trust installed its first Biorock structure in 2004 and now maintains more than 120 across the Gilis, making it the second-largest Biorock site in the world. It works directly with Indonesia's marine conservation authorities, patrols to prevent destructive fishing and anchoring, and runs education and land conservation projects alongside its reef work.
