Cultural dances, craft and ancient lore led by reformed gorilla poachers

Perched in the foothills of Volcanoes National Park in Kinigi, Gorilla Guardians Village began with a transformative idea: give poachers hunting mountain gorillas and forest game an alternative livelihood so protection becomes the incentive instead. Founded by former park warden Edwin Sabuhoro, the non-profit village has turned former poachers and their families into cultural custodians, conservation guides and organic farmers.

Visits are immersive and celebratory. Guests are welcomed with thunderous Intore warrior drumming, learn ancient medicinal plant secrets from traditional healers, try their hand at blacksmithing and pottery, and listen to candid stories around the hearth. Income directly funds village food security, clean water points, primary school fees and goat-rearing programmes that eliminate the need to hunt in the national park.

Sustainability

Climate & conservation

  • Poachers turned protectors, set up by former park staff member Edwin Sabuhoro to give people who hunted in Volcanoes National Park another way to earn a living
  • Wildlife guardians, ex-poachers now work to protect the wildlife they once hunted

Community & culture

  • Living heritage, villagers share Rwandan culture through Intore dance, oral storytelling, music and traditional healing
  • Batwa inclusion, members of the historically marginalised Batwa community, whose families lived in the forest before it became a national park, are among those employed

Commercial

  • Direct income, visitor revenue goes to community members and pays salaries to former poachers
  • Community fund, profits also pay school costs for children from poor families and help set up farming and handicraft cooperatives

Sustainable Development Goals

  • Life on Land (SDG 15)
  • Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8)
  • No Poverty (SDG 1)
