San led heritage centre on the Cape West Coast, with fynbos cabins
An hour north of Cape Town, the R27 runs past wheat fields and fynbos to a former farm that is now the closest thing the San have to an embassy. !Khwa ttu is a heritage centre, training college and 850 hectare reserve run with and for San communities from across southern Africa, and the only museum in the world devoted to them. The story is told in three low slung buildings, in San voices rather than academic ones, moving from human origins to contemporary San life. Guided walks and drives go out with San guides, reading tracks, plants and the older rock art of the region, while self guided trails and bike routes cross the reserve past eland, zebra, springbok and Cape mountain tortoise. You can stay too. Restored farm cottages and eco cabins sit deep in the fynbos, each with a private hot tub, wood burner and braai, and views that run to the Atlantic. The garden fresh restaurant handles the rest.

August to October brings the West Coast wildflowers and greenest fynbos. Summer is hot, dry and windy. Winter, June and July, is quiet, wet and good for fireside cabins.
Kids
Families are welcome, with easy trails, animals and a museum built for curiosity, though cabins sleep two so larger families need more than one.
Accessibility
The heritage centre, restaurant and shop are level and step free. Reserve trails are gravel and sandy, and cabins involve some walking.
