A former coffee store converted into 8 bandas on Kyambura Gorge

Kyambura Gorge Lodge occupies a former coffee-processing store and drying shed, converted by Volcanoes Safaris into eight bandas on the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Four standard and four deluxe rooms are built from brick or timber under thatched or corrugated-iron roofs, each with a mosquito net and private balcony looking over the savanna or down into Kyambura Gorge itself. The gorge is a sunken rainforest cut into the surrounding plains, home to the 'Lost Chimps of Kyambura', a small, isolated troop cut off from other chimpanzee populations by decades of land clearance.

Guests trek the gorge on foot along the Fig Tree Trail in search of the chimps, with roughly a two-in-three chance of a sighting, and can add a game drive on the Kasenyi plains or a boat safari along the Kazinga Channel. Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust runs community and conservation activities guests can join, including visits to the Kyambura Discovery Centre. Evenings wind down at the spa or pool, with views over the plains toward the distant Rwenzori Mountains.
