Le Tonle Guesthouse and Restaurant

Le Tonle Guesthouse is a riverside social-enterprise guesthouse on the Mekong in Kratie, Cambodia, a quiet riverside stop in northeastern Cambodia that most travellers pass through on their way to see the river's Irrawaddy dolphins, among the last pods left on this stretch of water. The guesthouse doubles as the working base for the Le Tonlé Tourism Training Centre, a programme that's trained young Cambodians from families earning under a dollar a day in hospitality since 2007, and every room, meal and boat trip here is run by trainees partway through that year-long course.

Start the day with a boat trip out to spot the dolphins, go kayaking in the afternoon or a day trip out to river islands like Koh Pdao. Dinner is at the trainees' own restaurant across the road, serving Khmer dishes alongside Western food, and guests are welcome to wander over to the training kitchen and classrooms to see the programme up close.
