Four canvas suites in the treetop canopy above the Ntiakitiak River
Mara Toto Tree Camp raises its four canvas suites up into the canopy of ebony trees along the Ntiakitiak River, on the border between the Maasai Mara National Reserve and the private Mara North Conservancy. Opened by Great Plains Conservation, the camp founded by filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert, each suite has a private lounge, exercise equipment, an outdoor verandah and an en-suite bathroom with a deep copper bath. Raised decks put guests level with the surrounding tree canopy rather than looking up at it.
A Great Plains Foundation Conservation & Community Contribution of $100 per person per night is built into the rate, funding habitat protection and community programmes across the reserve and conservancy. Guests explore both the Maasai Mara's open plains and the private, less-visited Mara North Conservancy on private game drives, guided birding walks and sunrise hot air balloon flights. Evenings gather around a fire pit beneath the trees, with the sounds of the forest replacing any need for entertainment.
