Community owned forest reserve with canopy walkway and turquoise pools
Ngare Ndare Forest Trust protects a pristine indigenous forest on the northern slopes of Mount Kenya, managed by the local Maasai and Borana communities. The reserve is most famous for its spectacular 450 metre canopy walkway, suspended high among the ancient cedar and olive trees, offering breathtaking views across the treetops and the chance to spot forest elephants below. At the end of the walkway, a series of azure natural pools fed by glacial springs provide an unforgettable swimming spot, where you can cool off in crystal clear water surrounded by lush forest.
The trust employs local rangers who guide visitors through the forest, sharing traditional knowledge of the landscape and its wildlife. Elephant and buffalo frequently pass through, and the forest is rich with birdlife and colobus monkeys. The community conservancy model ensures tourism revenue flows directly to the local people, funding schools, water projects and conservation efforts. This is a genuine community success story, where protecting the forest has become a source of pride and income for the families who have lived here for generations.
