Private island paradise that offers a blissful escape from Singapore
Nikoi Island is a 15-hectare private island resort in Indonesia's Riau Archipelago. If you are after barefoot luxury without the crowds, this is the place to be. There are only 15 villas here, made from driftwood and alang-alang grass by local craftspeople, with water heated by solar panels. Villas range from one- and two-bedroom beach houses on stilts to larger two- and three-bedroom villas with their own private pools, most within sight of the shoreline. Two-thirds of the island's rainforest and beaches remain untouched.
Snorkel or dive the house reef for seahorses and sea turtles, or join the resident marine conservation team on a nesting-season beach walk. Learn to cook with produce from the island's own farm, and look out for the resident white-bellied eagle from the hill above the villas. Book a Balinese massage at the open-air spa, or take a back-of-house tour to see the sustainability measures behind the resort, from its solar-heated water to its role in establishing the surrounding marine protected area.
