Social enterprise that puts community at the heart of Rwandan tourism
Multi award-winning Red Rocks Rwanda in Musanze, northern Rwanda, isn’t your typical gorilla trekking base camp. Yes, Volcanoes National Park is right on the doorstep, but what makes this place even more special is that Red Rocks is run as a social enterprise which puts local people at the heart of the experience, and ensures benefit from tourism stays within the community.
Guided treks into the Virunga Massif, home to mountain gorillas, are the obvious draw, but Red Rocks also shows visitors the cultural side to the region too. Try out banana beer making, painting or basket weaving, and head out on heritage walks or agricultural tours, guided by members of the village. Accommodation spans several options, all unfussy and fairly priced. The Gakondo Cottages are the pick, heritage buildings designed by local artisans in traditional Rwandan style, each with a double bed and ensuite. On-site there is also volleyball, table tennis, bike rentals, and a fire pit chill-out area with hammocks.
