A Bill Bensley-designed lodge overlooking the world's deepest gorge

Shinta Mani Mustang sits at 2,800 metres above Jomsom, on a hillside overlooking the Kali Gandaki gorge, the deepest in the world, with the Nilgiri Himal filling the view from every window. Local architect Prabal Shumsher Thapa built the 29 suites from stone, slate and wood in the style of a traditional Tibetan homestead, with waste water recycled to irrigate the property's apple and apricot orchards. Designer Bill Bensley then furnished each room with upcycled antiques and artwork by the late illustrator Robert Powell, who spent decades drawing the region's vernacular buildings.

The resort is reached only by fly-in or a long overland drive given Mustang's remoteness, and works with the Pasang Lhamu Foundation, named for the first Nepali woman to summit Everest, to fund education, vocational training and healthcare in nearby villages. Days out include treks to centuries-old monasteries and meditation caves cut into the sandstone cliffs, horse riding, or archery on the property's own range. Guests gather each evening around outdoor fire pits, the Nilgiri peak turning pink as the temperature drops.
