Track wild elephants and support farm coexistence beside Wasgamuwa

Operating since 1995 along the eastern edge of Sri Lanka's central highlands, the Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society pioneers practical solutions to human-elephant conflict. Their field operations are centred in Wasgamuwa, a critical rural corridor where subsistence farmers and families often encounter wild Asian elephants.

Volunteers join local scientists, monitoring elephant paths from observation treehouses, conducting bird and butterfly surveys, and inspecting solar-powered village fences. A hallmark project is Project Orange Elephant, where volunteers help plant citrus trees around crop boundaries, creating a natural deterrent that elephants dislike while providing farming families with a valuable cash crop.

Sustainability

Climate & conservation

  • Village fences, SLWCS pioneered putting solar electric fences around villages instead of around national parks
  • Community-led research, the Field Scouts Programme was Sri Lanka's first community-based elephant ecology research project
  • Field research, volunteers log elephant sightings, walk trail transects and check fences for elephant damage around Wasgamuwa National Park

Community & culture

  • Saving Elephants by Helping People, Sri Lanka's first community-based project to resolve human-elephant conflict
  • Safe school journeys, the EleBus has carried children through the Wasgamuwa elephant corridor
  • Project Orange Elephant, farmers plant orange trees around their fields as a living barrier that elephants avoid

Commercial

  • Farmer-run orange societies, each participating village sets its own orange price and sells without a middleman
  • Volunteer-supported, volunteer contributions help fund the electric fences, the EleBus and Project Orange Elephant
  • Independently recognised, winner of the UNDP Equator Prize in 2008 and named Charity of the Year by the American Chamber of Commerce in Sri Lanka in 2011

Sustainable Development Goals

  • Life on Land (SDG 15)
  • Quality Education (SDG 4)
  • No Poverty (SDG 1)
