Three Tree Hill Lodge

Three Tree Hill Lodge is best known as a base for exploring the Anglo-Boer War battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal, sitting right by the site of the Battle of Spioenkop, but military history is only one reason to come. Tucked into the Drakensberg foothills, the lodge looks out over the Mfazimnyama Valley and borders the Spioenkop Game Reserve, where rhino, giraffe and antelope roam freely beyond the garden fence. Accommodation is intimate: six double or twin cottages, plus a two-bedroom suite that sleeps two adults and three children, and a self-catering two-bedroom lodge for four. Each has its own veranda and en-suite bathroom, with antique sash windows and a settled, old-Africa feel throughout. Beyond the battlefield tours, days can be spent on game walks, horse riding, mountain biking and hiking into the Drakensberg, plus birdwatching across more than 300 recorded species. Meals are full board, farm-style and locally sourced, eaten by the fire in the main lodge or out on the veranda. The lodge is Fair Trade Tourism certified, owner-run by Simon and Cheryl Blackburn, and staffed largely from the nearby village of Hambrook.
