Local guides open up Stellenbosch through townships and vineyard walks
Stellenbosch is usually sold as oak lined streets and tasting rooms. Township and Village works the other side of that story, in Kayamandi, Pniel and Kylemore, the communities that built the winelands and rarely share in the money they bring in. Walks are led by guides who grew up here, so a morning in Kayamandi means spaza shops, hair salons, schools and family kitchens rather than a bus window view. The Stellenbosch Social Justice Walk traces the racial divides of the town and the 1964 forced removals in Die Vlakte, ending at the Co-Create Hub. Pniel on Foot follows the story of freed slaves who settled the village after 1843. Food sits at the centre of most days, whether that is flame grilled chicken, boerewors, pap and chakalaka at AmaZink or a home dining table in Kayamandi or Kylemore. There are lighter options too, djembe drumming sessions and a five hour wine walk over the mountain slopes with tastings on private estates.
