Anthropologist-led stays with Hadzabe, Maasai and Sami hosts
Visit Natives arranges stays and expeditions with indigenous hosts, built around the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers, Maasai and Datoga communities of northern Tanzania and Sami reindeer herders in Arctic Norway, with newer journeys into Papua New Guinea and the Sahara. Guests sleep in traditional homes or tents beside them, join daily activities like hunting, herding or gathering, and are hosted directly by community members rather than shown a staged demonstration.
Founded by anthropologist Anniina Sandberg, the company pays indigenous hosts directly for hosting, following the Indigenous Tourism Engagement Framework developed with the World Indigenous Tourism Alliance. Beyond direct payments, Visit Natives funds projects the communities themselves identify, including health insurance for Maasai women in Tanzania. Guests typically leave having stayed inside a family's home rather than observed a cultural performance from a vehicle.
